"It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a good deal of it." Seneca writes this not as a lament but as an observation with practical consequence — we are the authors of our own brevity.
The distinction Seneca draws between time spent and time lived is one I keep returning to. See also: his letter to Lucilius on possessing one's own time.
